Outdoor shade for a coastal location

Pick the project location on the Vietnamese coast and the shade and anchor you intend to use. The tool returns three separate wind thresholds, the corrosion category by distance to the waterline, and three lines you can put straight into a quotation. Wind zones follow QCVN 02:2022/BXD.

One number cannot do three jobs. The closing threshold is daily operations. The frame and canopy are checked at a short return period because the shade can be lowered. The anchor and footing are checked at 50 years with the shade closed, because once the canopy is furled only the column catches wind. Collapsing the three into one is where submissions go wrong.

Shade and anchor

The wind rating belongs to the shade plus anchor as a pair, not to the shade name. Change the anchor and you change the rating.

Preliminary lookup. It does not replace structural calculation or a stamped anchor drawing. Structure and anchoring belong to the client's contractor. Terra Nova supplies the product's technical data.

Assumptions and limits

Every coastal location uses terrain category A, open coast. Using category B for a beach under-counts the load by 9 to 16 percent. At 2.5 to 3.5 m the height factor is already close to 1, so the argument that a low shade sees light wind does not hold.

No sun shade survives the 50-year design storm anywhere on the Vietnamese coast. A shade is something you lower, not a storm-rated structure. Said upfront with numbers it becomes an operating procedure; said afterwards it becomes a dispute.
